SafeGuard EMR Blog

I should probably know better than take on an issue like privacy when I’m in a hurry and jotting down a post on my iPhone but I can’t help myself.

Here goes…

This week there has been a lot of heat about our privacy. The nyt ran a story about “over sharing”, facebook now makes our data available…

Interesting points about privacy on social networking sites and the fact that it should be easy to keep things private.   What about your private health records or your electronic medical records?  Do you know where that information is going?  Where it is stored?  Who has access?    There are some proponents in the health industry and EMR ecosystem that believe that EMR’s should be on a web based platform similar to Facebook.  That this would save billions of dollars and be easy to implement.  We couldn’t DISAGREE more….

Medical practitioners are generating volumes of patient, clinical and financial data. Depending on your EMR software, you may be using local systems or may be even subscribed to some hosted EMR software solution and accessing your data using your web browser. Have you ever wondered how secure is your EMR data? The data that you are generating by running your practice and using EMR (Electronic Medical Data) software is very sensitive and contains private information regarding your patients health and your critical financial information. Have you asked yourself the following?

How secure are the systems you have selected ?

Where is my personal health record stored?  What vendor does my Doctor use?  Is my information private?

What happens when the sensitive data is compromised ?

What agreement you have in place with your EMR software provider regarding your data security and responsibility?

What if there is a breach in the system?  What if you have an STD, plastic surgery, or an abortion and didn’t want people to know about it?

Is your data in secure location in US or abroad?

Who has access to your data and information?

At SafeGuard EMR we are the technologists of the future working with Doctors everyday ensuring that their data is highly secure and safe…we guarantee it!
